The is run by a volunteer Committee who meet about once a
month during the Season – November to May.
The aim of the Society is to promote and encourage the art of music by organizing concerts and
other musical activities and to provide financial and other assistance to students of music.
The Nassau Music Society has offered their Members and the Bahamian Community the
opportunity to listen to good quality classical and jazz music since the 1960’s. The Society was
officially incorporated in 1961 and the first President was Clement Bethel. Since then the fortunes
of the Society have fluctuated over the years but it has always managed to persevere with
successive Committees providing the impetus to organize concerts. It has been involved in a
variety of different events and, for example, in recent years opera singers Grace Bumby and
Isobel Buchanan, the London Philharmonic, the English Chamber Orchestra, Interpreti Venezia,
The Boy’s Choir of Harlem, Simon Estes, Yuri Bashmet and the Moscow Soloists, Natalia
Gutman, Dmitri Berlinsky and the Albek Twins have all performed for us in the Bahamas... click

President's Report 2008-2009
The Nassau Music Society has had a great Season. The
music was enjoyed by all and the artists excelled
themselves. And to make it even better for the Society,
the audience numbers were well above average and
those attending the concerts seemed to very much
appreciate the performances if the ovations they gave the
artists at the end of their performance are a guideline. We
must of course remember that in order for the programme
to work the Society needs help and the key ingredients in
this are the Sponsors and the Committee.. click here for

$80,000 Donation Creates the Nassau Music
Society Entrance Scholarship at The College of
The Bahamas
Nassau, BAHAMAS – The Nassau Music Society has made an
$80,000 donation to The College of The Bahamas to fund four major
entrance scholarships of $5,000 per year, with total value of $20,000
per award.
This donation represents the Nassau Music Society’s largest donation
to The College of The Bahamas. It also represents the largest
scholarship specifically for the study of music at The College. The
donation will allow for one new music scholarship to be awarded every
two years starting this academic year and ending in 2018.
The entrance scholarship is awarded to a first year full time music
major, demonstrating the greatest degree of talent and potential
success in the area of Music.
The donation is a generous contribution to The College’s agenda to
build diverse offerings of scholarships and financial aid to its students.
Such funding ensures that The College can compete for top students
who seek the advantage of a competitive academic experience, without
the worry of financial burden.
President, Janyne M. Hodder is delighted that The College is the
beneficiary of this new funding for the study of music.
“The Nassau Music Society’s support for music scholarship is timely,”
she said. “We recently opened The College’s newly renovated
Performing Arts Centre, and know that the recipients of this funding will
be the students who will command that stage in years to come. As we
build The University of The Bahamas, it is important that we build great
support for the arts, as an area that contributes to national
development, not only directly in terms of the country’s cultural
enrichment, but also as a component of the economy.”
Nassau Music Society President Patrick Thomson is pleased that the
Society is able to help young students of music to achieve their goals
in the field of music.
"We know there is a wealth of musical talent in the Bahamas and we
would like to see some of that talent channeled into classical music,”
he noted. “We do hope that this donation to The College of the
Bahamas will contribute to achieving that goal. On our side we need to
thank our Corporate Sponsors – SG Private Banking, Pictet Bank &
Trust, RoyalStar Assurance and Colina Imperial – for supporting us,
allowing us to feature world class musicians who not only perform for
young Bahamians but who also hold Master Classes for students and
most importantly allow us to help The College with scholarship funds."
About The College of The Bahamas: The mission of The College of
The Bahamas is to support and drive national development through
education, research & innovation, and service to the community. The
College’s academic offering has expanded through the introduction of
baccalaureate degree programmes offered across a broad range of
approximately 60 majors. It also facilitates the UWI Bachelor of Law
degree (LLB) and the Jamaica based University of Technology’s (U of
Tech) Bachelor in Pharmacy degree (BPharm). In partnership with
universities and colleges abroad, to date The College has facilitated
seven graduate degree programmes. Student enrolment has grown
over the years and currently hovers around the 5,000 mark. The
College now welcomes and graduates more baccalaureate students
than any other group. It also boasts an alumni base of more than
11,000.
About The Nassau Music Society: The Nassau Music Society has been

community to listen to good quality classical and jazz music since the
