The Nassau Music Society, under the patronage of Their Excellencies Sir Arthur Foulkes, Governor General of The Bahamas and Lady Foulkes, in association with the College of The Bahamas and thanks to the special sponsorship of Atlantis Resort, The American Embassy and its usual sponsors, namely Societe General Private Banking, Royal Star Assurance, Pictet and Colina Insurance, are proud to present a series of events and concerts featuring Ensemble du Monde,a New York based Ensemble comprised of Afro-American musicians and musicians of diverse ethnicities and nationalities.
These events and concerts will highlight the works and life of Joseph Boulogne, a French métisse (mixed race) music composer and fencer, son of a slave mother Nanon, and a white French father, and better known as Le Chevalier de Saint-George, Monsieur de Saint George or the "Black" Mozart.
Though his accomplishments were neglected for many centuries, Saint-George is now finally being recognized as a pivotal composer whose influence extended to many great contemporaneous musicians around Europe, including Mozart. Favored by Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI, Monsieur de Saint-George was also an athlete of exceptional ability, one of the greatest fencers of the 18th Century, and a civil rights leader and hero who fought in the French Revolution. This remarkable historical figure is a shining example of the excellence and cultural richness of people of colour worldwide.

The Symposium, organised in conjunction with the College of The Bahamas, will engage musicians, composers, and scholars from around the world in presentations, performances, and conversations on composers and performers of African and Afro-Caribbean descent. It is organized around the theme: Caribbean Art Music- An Unexplored Tradition.
Musical genres associated with the Caribbean typically include popular and traditional styles. Although many composers of art music have emerged from Caribbean nations and from the Caribbean Diaspora, information on this subject is scarce. As composers are slowly gaining recognition, a new understanding of and visibility for Caribbean art music is emerging. The mission of this symposium is to explore this topic of regional and international interest, drawing perspectives from a wide range of disciplines.
Symposium coordinators: Dr. Christine Gangelhoff and Marlon Daniel
